EDGEWATER RAMPS WILL DEVASTATE OUR COMMUNITY
I am writing as a concerned Bronx stakeholder regarding the Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Project. I believe that creating truck ramps at Edgewater Road would be devastating to the Hunts Point Community – a low income community of color and an environmental justice community.
Ramps at Edgewater will create an additional barrier to the many waterfront amenities on the Bronx River and brings additional truck traffic and emissions to the Hunts Point residential community, setting back decades of efforts to improve a community overburdened with industrial pollution, traffic fatalities, few parks, and high rates of asthma and heart disease.
OAK POINT RAMPS CREATE DIRECT ACCESS AND ACCOMPLISH COMMUNITY GOALS
I formally request that NYSDOT not place truck ramps on Edgewater Road and instead pursue the alternative plan at Oak Point Ave and Leggett Ave which would minimize impacts on the community by routing trucks to industrial areas away from where people live and play.
Oak Point Ramps are critical to improving access to Hunts Point from the greatest variety of routes, especially because of Oak Point’s proximity to the Tri-borough (Robert F Kennedy) Bridge. Pursuing ramps at Oak Point and Leggett Avenue would support previous recommendations developed from an extensive public process that had the support of residents, advocacy groups and the Hunts Point businesses.
